Examining The Sweet Taste of Success!

Hello and welcome back! Long time no talk! That is because I have a “real” job, which, believe or not, does actually take “real” time. Approximately 40 hours to be exact. No one told me that was part of the deal! That said it’s been a great first full week. While my job at PDC isn’t of particular note at this point, a new and great development broke yesterday:
I got a writing job. Yes, folks, you read it here first! I am now officially the examiner.com writer for recreation/hiking in San Diego! I applied a couple weeks ago, including sample articles I wrote just for the application as well as samples from my New Zealand blog entailing hiking, specifically the Costly Conquering of Taranaki. I didn’t think I’d hear back after so long, so this was a bolt of lightning from the blue.
Examiner.com is a relatively new nationwide venture. This is an online only media outlet with “newspapers” in every major city. Some say this might be the way of that news and newspaper are heading, as opposed to the local/print model we’ve had for so long. At any rate there is a large readership and large potential for growth so I’m stoked!
I just found, out, and there will be far more details to come. But here’s what I know so far:
-I’ll have my own page, 3-4 short articles per week (300-400 words) each. For reference this article is approximately 400 words as well.
-I get paid in part by readership numbers, at a rate that is apparently quite competitive for this type of pay scheme. Reviews by other examiners have seem to be quite positive.
- I’ll have my own bio & photo for my column (sweet!) Come take a hike with me and I’ll put your picture in too.
- I still own all of my own content after publication which means I can reuse or compile this content into larger articles or more whenever I want. I can also embed my stories here on C.A.X.!
I think I’ll also have wide creative license here. I’ll be able to take hikes during the week, from short to long and also integrate pictures and even video into my articles without any editing constraints. This means that by the end I could have a large collection of one-page articles and photos for the best hikes in San Diego. Book, anybody? They also have a travel section which I could envision transitioning to on my next adventure abroad.
But I get ahead of myself. I got the offer, and unlike digital the clarity of this picture will have to emerge over time. There’s more to be discovered than is known, but that’s the way I like it!
